At the time they caught each other’s eye, Dieter was travelling alone as the circus magician - having recently fallen out over the naming of a new rabbit act with his then current Calliope.

An accordion player and street hustler, Ellis came into Dieter’s life after trying to pickpocket the man during a busy street show in Paris.

Caught red-handed dipping her hands into Dieter’s pockets, Ellis was convinced she was going to be handed over to the police, until Dieter sat her down, and showed her - step by step - a better way to procure purses and wallets.

The actual details of HOW the conman met Dieter Roterburg change with each telling.

Some say they met in a Vegas jail cell, after both men independently tried to fleece the same casino, on the same night.

Easily one of the greatest card magicians in the world - if it wasn’t for Dieter, The Mechanic would still be selling shoes, in a high-end boutique, just off the Tottenham Court Road.

After lacing up a particularly fancy set of brogues which he was about to try on - Dieter noticed a rare dexterity in his fingers.

The Trickster owes much to a chance encounter with the famed Dieter Roterburg - after the latter’s classic automobile (a 1977 Triumph Spitfire) broke down at the side of the road, on the way to a Royal Gala.

A car mechanic at the time, he stopped to help the stranded Dieter - only to be paid with a single magic secret, as thanks for fixing the magicians car.

Chaotic comedy magician The Joker first met Dieter Roterburg at the Edinburgh fringe festival - after a late-night close-up set that got completely out of hand.

With an angry and inebriated crowd on his tail, bottles and glasses flying everywhere - Dieter helped him escape the angry mob… only for the pair to become firm friends.

Known for his classic card handling and gentlemanly style, The Gentleman first encountered Dieter while working the Summer season of a Weston-Super-Mare holiday camp.

Bored with both his routines and his audience, he was simply going through the motions, until a mysterious figure stepped out of the audience and challenged The Gentleman to a live magic competition… that mysterious figure was Dieter.

Known for commanding larger rooms and high-society stages, The Conjurer first crossed paths with Dieter during a Royal gala in Munich.

When technical cues faltered, with light rigs failing and no-one in the room to fix it - Dieter stepped out of the audience, manned a lone spotlight, and managed to light the entire act alone.

With a background rooted in production and staging, The Scholar first connected with Dieter through The Conjurer, who had taken The Scholar under his wing as his creative ward.

Dieter immediately recognised his instinct for theatrical framing and told him, “You already think like a director — now perform like one.”
